I am delighted with this review from my latest book, The Cranky Ballerina, from The quill and Quire<\/a>. They compare me to Kate Beaton<\/a>, Jon Klassen<\/a> and Melanie Watt<\/a>!! I think I’m going to explode with pride.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"JulyAug-BfYP_CrankyBallerina_Cover\"<\/p>\n

The Cranky Ballerina<\/em>\u00a0introduces readers to Ada, who, as the title suggests, is a reluctant dancer. Ada\u2019s not usually in a bad mood, except on Saturdays, when she has to go to ballet class.<\/p>\n

Ada hates ballet. She hates everything about it, from the way-too-tight leotard and the way-too-itchy tutu to the pli\u00e9s, jet\u00e9s, and arabesques (\u201carabesques are grotesque\u201d). When she tries to pirouette, she spins out of control. In the words of her tiny monster companion, ballet\u2019s just \u201cnot her thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Happily, Ada discovers that although her moves aren\u2019t ideal for ballet, they\u2019re perfect for karate. She joins a karate class, and suddenly Saturday mornings are fun again.<\/p>\n

The latest picture book from Montreal author-illustrator Elise Gravel includes everything fans of her work have come to expect \u2013 fun, expressive illustrations; witty text; and a unique but relatable perspective.<\/p>\n

The story finds a creative way to teach young readers a valuable life lesson: they don\u2019t have to be good at everything they try. By following Ada\u2019s story, they\u2019ll also learn that sometimes failing at one thing just means they might end up being exceptionally good at something they haven\u2019t tried yet.<\/p>\n

The book also looks at the ideas of community and kindness. While Ada\u2019s ballet teacher tries hard to encourage her, her fellow students aren\u2019t as kind. But when she joins the karate class, Ada finds a place where she really fits in, and people who support her and cheer her on.<\/p>\n

Parents and teachers will have no problem finding funny details in the illustrations, and the speech bubbles will make it easy to get creative when reading aloud. Fans of Kate Beaton\u2019s\u00a0The Princess and the Pony<\/em><\/a>, Jon Klassen\u2019s\u00a0This Is Not My Hat<\/em><\/a>, and M\u00e9lanie Watt\u2019s\u00a0Scaredy Squirrel<\/a>\u00a0series will love this one.<\/p>\n
